Northwest R-I Celebrates Student Leaders

Northwest Student Leaders Northwest R-I School District celebrated their student leaders at the Northwest Leadership Gala on March 13, 2019 at Murphy Elementary School.

The student leaders represented fifth, eighth, 11th and 12th grades from each of the six elementary and two middle schools in the district, as well as Northwest High School. They were chosen through their participation in the district-wide initiative, “The Leader in Me,” a program by Franklin Covey designed to teach students essential skills like critical thinking, emotional control, initiative, communication, and many others to prepare them for success in a fast-paced and ever-changing world. In all, 35 fifth-grade students, six eighth-grade students, four 11th grade students, and two 12th grade students were honored.

"The Leader in Me program is an excellent way to incorporate the timeless and universal principles of Covey's ‘7 Habits of Highly Effective People’ into the culture of a school,” said Northwest Superintendent Dr. Desi Kirchhofer. “Students are learning and practicing the essential skills to be successful in and out of school."

The Northwest Leadership Gala was the first time the district has held a single event that celebrated students from all of the schools together.
