• first day

We know many of our families are doing last minute preparations for tomorrow's big first day of school. We also know that many of you will be snapping photos of your students. We'd LOVE to see them. Please email those pictures to or tweet them @NorthwestRISD using the hashtag #NWLoveLearnLead. Please share!

As we prepare to welcome students and staff back, we wanted to share some important information regarding the Solar Eclipse. We've been speaking with local authorities and administrators here in the Northwest School District and in the greater Jefferson County/St. Louis County area. Through those conversations, the decision has been made to cancel classes on August 21, 2017.

Although we would have loved to have shared in this once in a lifetime educational event with our students and staff, my conversations with local first responders have led me to conclude that keeping our students home that day is best. Student and staff safety remain a top priority. After hearing the concerns of local law enforcement regarding student transportation and security of our facilities and grounds, we felt this decision serves the best interest of everyone.

We understand this disruption to the school calendar does mean that some of our families may have to make alternative arrangements for their children that day. We hope that by providing this notice, it will assist everyone in making those plans now. Also, as you begin to make those decisions for that day, please know that it will move the last day of school to May 14, 2018. This day could also change if we experience inclement weather throughout the year. Please stay connected by downloading our app or visiting the District’s website for an updated calendar.

A list of Solar Eclipse educational resources has been compiled here to help those families who plan to be home with their children that day. With no classes that day, we want to reassure you that our students and staff will continue to make the most of our unique position in this historical event. Lessons that teachers were working on surrounding the Solar Eclipse will still take place either in the days leading up to or after the actual event.

Thank you for your understanding as we navigate this once in a lifetime event while also keeping student and staff safety a top priority. We understand that making changes to your child’s school routine as well as work schedules for our families are never easy. We appreciate your continued support and look forward to seeing all of our students return on August 17, 2017.
